Russian news 5/17/2024 escalation or descalation?

Russia-Ukraine War:

  • In Kharkiv, Ukraine, at least two people were killed and 19 others wounded in a Russian bombing. Four of the wounded are in critical condition. Additionally, a Ukrainian drone attack killed one person and injured another in Russia’s Belgorod region.

  • About 8,000 civilians from the flashpoint town of Vovchansk, near the Russian border, have been evacuated.

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expects Russia to intensify its offensive in the northeast. He also mentioned that Ukraine lacks sufficient air defenses to hold the front line.

  • Russian troops have advanced along the northeastern border, but Ukrainian forces have halted their progress. This region could be the “first wave” of a wider offensive.

  • Russia’s new offensive has expanded the zone of active hostilities by almost 70 km, forcing Ukraine to spread its forces and use reserve troops.

  • Zelenskyy emphasized the need for advanced aircraft to achieve air parity with Russia.
